Technology Highlight – Google Street View for Interiors

UC Berkley students and faculty have developed a large backpack that looks like it’s straight out of Ghostbusters which uses lasers and cameras to scan a building’s interiors as the person wearing the backpack walks through it. It then uses the data from the lasers and pictures from the cameras to create instant 3D maps of the interior of the building – think Google Street View inside buildings. That’s exactly what they hope it will be used for. The group has helped create the 3D street views of buildings for Google Maps and is hoping with this technology you will soon be able to zoom into the interior of buildings.
