Google has been secretly building and testing cars that drive themselves. The cars use video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic, as well as detailed maps to navigate the road. During testing, the cars are never unmanned, there is a trained safety driver behind the wheel and a software monitor in the passenger seat – they’ve also briefed local police on their work. Their hope is that someday this technology will help cut the number of lives lost every year in accidents, as well as transform highways, the way we share driving, and making more efficient use of our time in cars. It provides an interesting glimpse of what the future of driving could be.
