If you haven’t heard of Banksy yet, he’s a famous for his stealth graffiti projects that mix social commentary and subversive street art and he’s been a pop culture pehnom over the last year. He’s incredibly elusive and prefers to stay below the radar. His biggest exposure has been an intro to an episode of The Simpsons that you can see here, as well as a documentary featuring Banksy called “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” which has been nominated for an Academy Award in the best documentary feature category. The latest stunt featuring the artist was an eBay auction where the anonymous seller claimed to know the identity of Banksy based on public tax records through art sales and was selling his true identity to the highest bidder. Bidding started at $3,000 and had over 40 bids with the highest coming in at just under $1 Million. However, one day before the auction was supposed to close, it was pulled from the site. This is wildly suspected to be another prank pulled by Banksy, maybe even to promote his documentary. We suspect Banksy is actually a brand of sorts composed of several artists and others who have appraised his work in museums have the same theory due to the range of styles and methods in his work. Either way, keep an eye on this guy in the press this year.
