Technology Highlight – Fire Ant Raft

This is what we call natural technology – ants are creepy, crawly little creatures, but they’ve been studied extensively because each species is fascinating in their own rights. Mechanical Engineers at Georgia Tech have been studying the fire ant’s ability to link together and form rafts on the surface of water to survive floods – they compare it to a Gore-Tex type fabric. They are so tightly knit together that water cannot penetrate their self-made raft keeping the ants completely dry. Watch the video, it’s incredible what nature can do.
